My Career

I completed a six year apprenticeship with John Feldberg, harpsichord makers, of Sevenoaks Kent, in 1969. During my apprenticeship I also worked part time for Derek Adlam for 2 years.

In 1971 Derek set up in partnership with Richard Burnett as Adlam - Burnett Historical Keyboard Instruments making reproductions of early keyboard instruments. The company employed 10 craftsmen in workshops at the now famous Finchcocks Musical Instrument Museum at Goudhurst Kent, with myself as workshop manager.

After the closure of the Adlam - Burnett workshops in 1980, I set up my own business as a musical instrument and cabinet maker specialising in ‘one-off’ pieces to clients' specific requirements.

In 1986 I moved from Kent to north Nottinghamshire where I made the casework for Derek Adlam’s forte pianos and other keyboard instruments. Customers for these instruments have included Colin Tilney, Christopher Hogwood and Melvyn Tan. In 2009, I moved to new a workshop in Berriedale, Caithness.

I can undertake individual commissions in musical instrument and cabinet making, furniture restoration, architectural joinery and restoration. Recent clients include Thoresby Hall, Welbeck Abbey, Gonalston Hall and Prestwold Hall. Photographs can be found elsewhere on the website.
